Indigenous quite rare herb of rocky dry coastal cliffs and hills.
Anguilla, St. Barthélemy, Antigua, Saba, Guadeloupe, La Désirade, Marie Galante, Les Saintes, Dominica, Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Grenada, Barbados, rest of West Indies, North America, Mesoamerica, South America.   

This species is usually considered synonymous with Cyperus brunneus Swartz.
However Mark T. Strong separates the 2 taxons - using his key, p258, our taxon keys out as C. planifolius.
