Indigenous quite rare tree of openings in semi-evergreen seasonal forest, especially by roads, and in ravines in lower montane rainforest.
St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Guadeloupe, Marie Galante, Dominica, Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Grenada, Greater Antilles, Mesoamerica, South America.       The soft timber, balsa, is seldom utilized here. The kapok around the seed is stuffed in mattresses.
