Naturalized quite rare vine of disturbed semi-open dry and moist areas.
Native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
Also cultivated as food crop for its young pod and, more commonly, for its seeds ('peas').
In the wild, it is nearly always the white-flowered form which is found, not the purple.
